About

The Headrow, Leeds LS1 3AA

Leeds Art Gallery has one of the best collections of 20th-century British art outside London. The gallery sits on The Headrow in an imposing Victorian building and houses works by Henry Moore (who studied at Leeds College of Art), Barbara Hepworth (born in nearby Wakefield), Francis Bacon, Bridget Riley, and a strong contemporary programme. The tiled hall café, with its elaborate Victorian ceramic tiles, is one of the most beautiful café spaces in the country. The Henry Moore Institute next door, connected to the gallery, focuses on sculpture and is excellent — rotating exhibitions in beautifully designed gallery spaces, with a research library and archive. Both are free. The permanent collection at the art gallery is well displayed and manageable in an hour, with highlights including major works by Atkinson Grimshaw (the Leeds-born Victorian painter famous for his moonlit dock scenes). The gallery reopened in 2017 after a major refurbishment and the spaces are light and modern while respecting the original Victorian architecture. The rooftop terrace has good views across the city centre. A genuinely first-rate gallery that doesn't get the recognition it deserves nationally.
