About

29 George Street, Leeds LS2 7HY

Kirkgate Market is the largest covered market in Europe and one of the finest Victorian market halls in Britain. The 1904 hall has a stunning iron-and-glass roof and over 400 stalls selling everything from fresh fish and butchers' meat to fabrics, vintage clothing, and household goods. It's where Marks & Spencer started — Michael Marks opened his Penny Bazaar here in 1884, and there's a plaque commemorating the spot. The market has two halls — the 1904 hall is the architectural star, but the 1976 hall and the open market outside add to the range. The food stalls are excellent — proper butchers, fishmongers, a brilliant Caribbean food counter, and some of the cheapest and best lunches in Leeds. The fresh fish row alone is worth the visit. Kirkgate Market is a proper working market, not a curated foodie destination. It's lively, loud, and real. The stallholders are characters. The prices are genuine. It's the kind of place where you go in for a pound of apples and come out with a bag of spices, a new phone case, and a box of mangoes. Go on a Saturday morning for the full experience.
