About

Armouries Drive, Leeds LS10 1LT

The Royal Armouries Museum on Leeds Dock is one of the national museums — housing the UK's national collection of arms and armour in a purpose-built waterside building. The collection spans a thousand years, from medieval swords and suits of armour to modern military equipment. The tournament gallery is a highlight — full-size horses in jousting armour, charging at each other across the room. The museum does an excellent job of putting weapons and armour in context — the stories of the people who wore them, the craftsmanship involved, and the social and political history. The live demonstrations are a real draw — jousting, swordplay, and falconry displays happen regularly in the outdoor arena and are spectacular, especially for kids. It's free, which for a museum of this quality is remarkable. The building sits on Clarence Dock (now Leeds Dock), a developing waterside area with bars, restaurants, and the Leeds Dock water taxi. Allow at least 2-3 hours. The samurai armour collection, the elephant armour, and the Henry VIII tournament armour are particular highlights. One of the best free museums in the North of England.
