York's Chocolate Story
About
York has a legitimate claim to being the chocolate capital of Britain — Rowntree's and Terry's both started here, giving the world Kit Kats, Smarties, Chocolate Oranges, and Fruit Pastilles. York's Chocolate Story tells this sweet history through a guided tour that covers 300 years of confectionery, from the arrival of cocoa in York to the industrial innovations that made chocolate available to everyone. The tour includes live demonstrations of chocolate-making by a professional chocolatier, tastings throughout, and the chance to create your own chocolate lolly. It's well-pitched — entertaining enough for children, genuinely informative for adults, and the chocolate samples are generous. The guides are engaging and clearly love their subject. Book in advance for timed tours, especially during school holidays. The attached shop sells excellent handmade chocolates — the salted caramel truffles are outstanding. The experience lasts about 75 minutes. It's right in the centre of York on King's Square, making it easy to combine with a walk down the Shambles. A sweet (literally) way to learn about York's industrial heritage.
