About

The Shambles, York YO1 7LZ

The Shambles is a narrow medieval street in the heart of York that looks almost exactly as it did 700 years ago — half-timbered buildings lean towards each other across the lane, upper floors jutting out so far they nearly touch. It was originally the street of butchers and meat sellers (the word 'shambles' comes from the Anglo-Saxon for slaughterhouse), and you can still see the wide window ledges where meat was displayed and the hooks above some doorways. Today the butchers have been replaced by independent shops — many Harry Potter themed since the street's resemblance to Diagon Alley was noticed — but the architecture is genuinely medieval and the atmosphere is magical, especially early in the morning or on a winter evening when the crowds thin and the street empties. The surrounding Shambles Market (daily, in the square behind the street) is worth exploring too — local produce, hot food, crafts, and vintage finds. The Shambles is best visited before 9am or after 5pm when the tour groups have gone. Walk slowly, look up at the buildings, and notice the details — timber carvings, ancient glass, and the lean of structures that have been standing since the 14th century.
