About

Tower Street, York YO1 9SA

Clifford's Tower sits atop a steep mound in the heart of York — the last visible remnant of York Castle, built by William the Conqueror in 1068 and rebuilt in stone in the 13th century. The distinctive quatrefoil (four-lobed) shape is unique in English castle architecture. The views from the top — across the city rooftops to the Minster and the surrounding countryside — are some of the best in York. The tower's history is dark as well as dramatic. In 1190, it was the site of one of the worst anti-Jewish massacres in English history, when around 150 Jewish men, women, and children died here. A memorial plaque at the base and the daffodils planted on the mound each spring honour this history. The interior exhibition, installed during recent conservation work, tells this story sensitively and powerfully. The climb to the top is short but steep. Allow 30-45 minutes for the full visit including the exhibition. It's managed by English Heritage and is right in the city centre, surrounded by the remains of the castle bailey. Combine with a walk along the river to the Museum Gardens.
