About

2 Coffee Yard, off Stonegate, York YO1 8AR

Barley Hall is a restored medieval townhouse hidden in the heart of York — and the story of its discovery is almost as remarkable as the building itself. In the 1980s, what appeared to be a derelict Victorian warehouse was found to contain a complete 15th-century timber-framed hall, concealed behind centuries of later additions. The building has been carefully restored to show how a wealthy York merchant would have lived around 1483. The approach is hands-on — visitors are encouraged to touch the furnishings, try on period clothing, sit in the chairs, and handle replica objects. This makes it particularly engaging for children, who can experience medieval life rather than just look at it behind glass. The Great Hall with its open hearth and exposed timber frame is impressive, and the period gardens are a pleasant bonus. It's tucked away off Stonegate (one of York's finest medieval streets) and many visitors walk right past the entrance. Allow about 45 minutes. It's a small museum but a charming one, and the story of the building's rediscovery adds an extra layer of fascination.
