About

Brick Lane, London E1 6QL

Brick Lane is east London at its most vibrant, layered, and contradictory. This single street condenses Huguenot silk weavers, Jewish tailors, Bangladeshi restaurants, hipster coffee shops, vintage stores, and some of the best street art in London into a noisy, colourful, endlessly fascinating mile. The famous curry houses that line the southern stretch are a rite of passage (locals tip: ignore the touts and head to Tayyabs on Fieldgate Street nearby). The Sunday market — actually the Truman Brewery market — is the main draw for visitors: food stalls from every cuisine imaginable, vintage clothing, independent designers, and vinyl sellers. The surrounding streets (Cheshire Street, Sclater Street) have their own smaller markets and pop-up shops. The street art changes constantly — look for work by ROA, Stik, and whoever's new and brilliant this month. Brick Lane is best experienced on foot, starting from the Shoreditch High Street end and walking south. The Beigel shops near the top (Beigel Bake, open 24 hours) are an institution — salt beef beigels at 3am after a night out is a London tradition. Come hungry, come curious.
