Tower of London
About
Few places in England can match the Tower of London for sheer historical weight. This 900-year-old fortress has served as a royal palace, prison, armoury, and execution ground — and it wears every one of those roles in its ancient stones. The Crown Jewels alone are worth the visit, but it's the smaller details that stick with you: the ravens stalking the grounds, the graffiti carved by Tudor prisoners, the medieval chapel where Anne Boleyn is buried. The Yeoman Warder tours are genuinely brilliant — these are retired military personnel who live on-site and tell the stories with real passion and dark humour. Budget at least three hours. Go early on a weekday morning if you can; by midday in summer the queues for the Jewel House can stretch for over an hour. It's not cheap, but if you're a member of Historic Royal Palaces you get unlimited free entry. The views across the Thames to Tower Bridge and City Hall are a bonus most people don't expect.
