About

Silk Street, London EC2Y 8DS

The Barbican is London's brutalist cultural fortress — a vast concrete arts complex that houses a world-class concert hall, two theatres, three cinemas, an art gallery, a library, a conservatory, and several restaurants. It's the home of the London Symphony Orchestra and the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and its programming spans everything from contemporary dance to experimental film. The building itself is a love-it-or-hate-it icon. Completed in 1982, its raw concrete terraces, elevated walkways, and hidden gardens feel like a city within a city. Getting lost in the Barbican is a rite of passage — the yellow lines on the floor exist because even regulars can't navigate it. The Conservatory on Level 3 is a tropical greenhouse hidden inside the concrete — free to visit on selected weekends and genuinely surreal. The Barbican Art Gallery hosts consistently excellent exhibitions, and the cinema programme is one of the best in London for independent and international film. Matinee screenings are a bargain. Check the foyer programme too — free live music and installations appear regularly in the public spaces.
