About
Broadway Market in Hackney is one of London's best Saturday markets — a street market running the length of Broadway Market from the Regent's Canal to London Fields. The stalls lean towards artisan food producers, street food, vintage clothing, independent designers, and plants. The food is excellent — fresh oysters, sourdough bread, coffee from several specialist roasters, and hot food from around the world. The market has been trading in some form since the 1890s, but the current incarnation — which took off in the 2000s — is firmly in the artisan/independent mould. The permanent shops along the street are equally good — Climpson's (coffee), Fin and Flounder (fish), and Broadway Bookshop are local institutions. The pubs — the Dove, the Cat and Mutton — fill up on market days. The market runs every Saturday and gets busy by late morning. Come early for the best selection, or later for a more relaxed wander. London Fields park at the north end is a natural extension on a sunny day. The vibe is creative, sociable, and very Hackney — independent businesses, good food, and a community atmosphere that feels genuine rather than curated.
