About

Belvedere Road, South Bank, London SE1 8XT

If you love cinema — properly love it, not just going to see the latest blockbuster — BFI Southbank is paradise. Nestled under Waterloo Bridge on the South Bank, it screens everything from silent films with live piano accompaniment to new international releases, retrospectives, director seasons, and rare archive footage you won't see anywhere else. The four screens range from an intimate studio to a 450-seat main auditorium, and the programming is curated with real intelligence. A typical week might include a Kurosawa retrospective, a new Iranian drama, a kids' animation matinee, and a live-scored screening of a 1920s classic. The Mediatheque in the foyer lets you browse the BFI's vast archive for free. Membership is excellent value if you visit regularly — priority booking and discounted tickets add up fast. The bar and restaurant area overlooking the Thames is a lovely spot before or after a screening. Combined with a walk along the South Bank, this makes for a perfect evening out.
