About

Leake Street, Waterloo, London SE1 7NN

Leake Street Tunnel runs beneath the platforms of Waterloo station, and every inch of its walls is covered in graffiti — legally. This is London's longest legal graffiti wall, and it's been an ever-changing open-air gallery since Banksy staged his 'Cans Festival' here in 2008. The artwork is constantly evolving as artists paint over each other, so what you see today will be different next week. The quality ranges from beginner tags to genuinely impressive large-scale murals. On weekends you'll often find artists at work — it's fascinating to watch. The tunnel also houses several bars and restaurants including Graffiti Tunnel Bar and the atmospheric Vaults theatre space, which hosts immersive productions and events in the cavernous spaces beneath the railway. It's free, open 24 hours, and you can walk through it in five minutes — but you'll probably linger longer than you planned. The tunnel connects to the South Bank, so combine it with a walk along the river to the Tate Modern or BFI Southbank. Best photographed when the light at either end creates contrast with the painted walls.
