About

Castle Street, Glasgow G4 0QZ

Glasgow Cathedral is the only medieval cathedral on the Scottish mainland to have survived the Reformation intact. It's a stunning building — the lower church (or crypt) with its forest of stone columns around the tomb of St Mungo, Glasgow's patron saint, is one of the finest medieval interiors in Scotland. The stained glass, the vaulted ceilings, and the sheer sense of age are extraordinary. Behind the cathedral rises the Necropolis — Glasgow's Victorian cemetery built on a hill overlooking the city. It's modelled on Père Lachaise in Paris, and the elaborate monuments to Glasgow's merchant princes, tobacco lords, and industrialists are magnificent. The views from the top across the cathedral, the city centre, and out to the Campsie Fells are superb. Both are free. The cathedral is active Church of Scotland, so services take place regularly. The Necropolis can be muddy underfoot in winter — decent shoes are recommended. Together they're one of the most atmospheric historic sites in Scotland, and most visitors to Glasgow miss them entirely, which is a shame.
