About

11 Mitchell Lane, Glasgow G1 3NU

The Lighthouse is Scotland's Centre for Design and Architecture, housed in Charles Rennie Mackintosh's first public building — the former Glasgow Herald Building on Mitchell Lane. The Mackintosh Tower is the main draw — climb the helical staircase to the top for panoramic views over the city centre rooftops. It's one of Glasgow's best viewpoints and surprisingly few tourists find it. The building hosts rotating exhibitions on architecture, design, and urban planning in beautifully converted spaces. The permanent Mackintosh Interpretation Centre tells the story of Glasgow's most famous architect and his extraordinary body of work across the city. Even if you're not particularly into architecture, the tower climb alone is worth the visit. It's right in the city centre, just off Buchanan Street, and it's free. The café on the upper floor is a decent spot for coffee with a view. Allow about an hour, more if you're interested in the exhibitions. A hidden gem that most Glasgow visitors walk straight past.
