About

Merchant City, Glasgow G1 1DQ

Merchant City is Glasgow's most elegant neighbourhood — grand Georgian and Victorian buildings that once housed the tobacco lords and sugar barons who made Glasgow one of the richest cities in the British Empire. Today it's a mix of upmarket restaurants, cocktail bars, independent galleries, and cultural venues, all on handsome, walkable streets. The area stretches from George Square east to the High Street and south to the Trongate. Key spots include the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) with its traffic-coned Duke of Wellington statue, the Italian Centre with its designer shops, and the Merchant Square courtyard with its bars and weekend events. The Tron Theatre and the Centre for Contemporary Arts (CCA) are cultural anchors. The Merchant City Festival in late July is the neighbourhood's big moment — free music, theatre, and art across the streets and venues. Year-round, it's the place for a nicer meal out or a cocktail in surroundings that remind you Glasgow was once the Second City of the Empire. Less studenty than the West End, more polished but still friendly.
