About

Trinity Street, Cambridge CB2 1TQ

Trinity is the largest, wealthiest, and arguably the grandest of the Cambridge colleges. The Great Court is the largest enclosed courtyard in Europe — a vast, perfect quad surrounded by Tudor and Jacobean buildings with a fountain in the centre. Newton, Byron, Tennyson, Nehru, and 33 Nobel Prize winners studied here. The Great Court Run (completing the 367-metre circuit during the 43 seconds of the noon bell) was immortalised in Chariots of Fire. The Wren Library, designed by Christopher Wren, is one of the most beautiful libraries in the world. The interior is lined with Grinling Gibbons limewood carvings, and the collections include Newton's personal copy of the Principia, Milne's original Winnie-the-Pooh manuscripts, and a lock of Newton's hair. Visitor access is limited — check the opening hours. The college charges admission, which goes towards maintaining the extraordinary buildings. The avenue of limes leading from the Great Gate to the river is beautiful. If you visit one college in Cambridge, Trinity and King's are the two strongest contenders, and Trinity has the advantage of usually being less crowded.
