About

King's Parade, Cambridge CB2 1ST

King's College Chapel is one of the greatest Gothic buildings in Europe — a masterpiece of perpendicular Gothic architecture with the largest fan-vaulted ceiling in the world. The vault alone is worth the visit: 12 bays of stone lacework spanning 12 metres unsupported, built between 1512 and 1515. The Rubens Adoration of the Magi behind the altar and the extraordinary medieval stained glass windows (the finest complete set in England) complete a building of jaw-dropping beauty. The Chapel Choir is world-famous — the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols on Christmas Eve is broadcast globally by the BBC. If you can attend Evensong during term time (Tue-Sat 17:30, Sun 15:30), do — hearing the choir in this acoustic is an experience that transcends religious affiliation. Visitor entry is ticketed and the chapel can get busy, especially in summer. Go first thing when it opens if you can. The back lawn running down to the Cam is one of the most photographed views in England. Henry VI founded the college in 1441 and intended the chapel to be the most magnificent in Christendom — he wasn't wrong.
