About

Queens' Road, Cambridge CB3 9ET

The Backs is the name for the stretch of land behind the colleges that run along the River Cam, and it's one of the most beautiful urban landscapes in England. College gardens, ancient trees, immaculate lawns, and medieval buildings reflected in the river — it's the view that defines Cambridge. The walk from Silver Street Bridge north past Queens', King's, Clare, Trinity, and St John's is extraordinary. In spring, the Backs are carpeted with crocuses and daffodils. In summer, the lime trees are in full leaf and punts drift past. In autumn, the colour is spectacular. Even in winter, the architecture against bare branches has its own stark beauty. Clare College gardens and the Fellows' Garden at Trinity are particularly fine. The best way to see the Backs is on foot along Queen's Road or from the river in a punt. The view of King's College Chapel from the Backs is the postcard shot of Cambridge. Most of the college grounds are private, but the views from the public paths are spectacular. Free, beautiful, and available every day of the year.
