About

Mansion Lane, Roundhay, Leeds LS8 2HH

Roundhay Park is one of the largest urban parks in Europe — over 700 acres of parkland, lakes, woodland, and gardens three miles north of Leeds city centre. The two lakes, Waterloo Lake and the Upper Lake, are the centrepiece — rowing boats are available on Waterloo Lake in summer, and the walk around both lakes through mature woodland is beautiful at any time of year. Tropical World, in the park's grounds, is a series of climate-controlled environments — tropical rainforest, desert, aquarium, and butterfly house — that make a great family visit, especially on a rainy day. The Alhambra Garden and the Canal Gardens are peaceful formal spaces. The park hosts concerts and events throughout the year — the Roundhay Park concerts have featured some of the biggest names in music. The park has a proper community feel — joggers, dog walkers, families, and weekend footballers all use it heavily. The Lakeside Café is a good spot for coffee overlooking the water. The park was the filming location for the world's first moving pictures, shot by Louis Le Prince in 1888 — there's a plaque commemorating the event. A magnificent green space that gives Leeds residents something Manchester and Sheffield can't easily match.
