About

Cromwell Road, South Kensington, London SW7 5BD

The Natural History Museum is one of those places that genuinely takes your breath away — and that's before you even look at an exhibit. The Romanesque cathedral-like building designed by Alfred Waterhouse is covered in terracotta tiles depicting living and extinct species, and the main Hintze Hall with its blue whale skeleton suspended from the ceiling is one of London's most spectacular interiors. The permanent collections are world-class and completely free. The dinosaur gallery remains a massive draw for kids (and adults who pretend they're there for the kids), the minerals collection is dazzling, and the Darwin Centre lets you peer into the working museum where scientists actually carry out research. The Wildlife Garden outside is a hidden gem — a genuine slice of English woodland in the middle of South Kensington. Timing matters here. School holidays and weekends are intense — arrive at opening time or after 3pm for a calmer experience. The paid temporary exhibitions are usually excellent and far less crowded. The museum shop is genuinely good too, particularly for kids' gifts that aren't just tat.
