Portobello Road Market
About
Portobello Road in Notting Hill hosts one of the world's great street markets — and unlike many 'world-famous' markets, it genuinely delivers. The Saturday antiques market at the Notting Hill end is the main event: hundreds of dealers selling everything from Georgian silverware to mid-century furniture, Victorian jewellery to rare vinyl. Even if you're not buying, the browsing is fantastic. But Portobello is more than antiques. As you walk south, the market transitions through fashion (under the Westway), then fruit and veg, then second-hand goods. The whole road is lined with pastel-painted Victorian townhouses that are absurdly photogenic. Side streets like Elgin Crescent and Westbourne Grove have excellent independent restaurants and shops. Saturday is the only day for the full antiques experience, and it gets very busy by 11am. Serious antique hunters arrive at 6am when dealers are still setting up. Friday has a smaller market. Weekdays you'll find the shops open but fewer street stalls. Combine with a visit to the Electric Cinema (one of London's oldest) or the Museum of Brands nearby.
