Daunt Books
About
Daunt Books on Marylebone High Street is regularly cited as one of the most beautiful bookshops in the world, and for once the hyperbole is justified. The original Edwardian shop — built in 1912 with long oak galleries, skylights, and stained-glass windows — was designed as an antiquarian bookshop and retains every ounce of that original grandeur. What makes Daunt special beyond the aesthetics is how it organises its stock. Travel writing and fiction are arranged by country rather than author, so the Italy section might have a novel set in Naples shelved alongside a hiking guide for the Dolomites and a history of the Roman Empire. It encourages browsing and discovery in a way that algorithm-driven recommendations never will. The staff are knowledgeable and genuinely passionate readers — ask for recommendations and you'll leave with a stack you didn't know you needed. The children's section in the basement is excellent. There are now several Daunt locations across London, but the Marylebone original is the one to visit. Even if you don't buy anything (you will), it's worth the trip just to stand in the gallery and breathe in that old-bookshop smell.
