About

Calderstones Park, Liverpool L18 3JB

Calderstones Park is one of Liverpool's most beautiful and historically significant parks — 94 acres of parkland, woodland, and gardens in south Liverpool named after six Neolithic standing stones (the Calderstones) that are now displayed in a purpose-built facility called The Mansion House. The stones, which date from around 3000 BC, are covered in cup-and-ring marks and are among the oldest human-made objects in the Liverpool area. The park has a remarkable collection of mature trees — including an ancient allotment of 1,000-year-old oaks and one of the finest collections of Japanese cherry trees outside Japan. The spring blossom is spectacular. The walled garden, ice house, and Reader's Garden are all beautifully maintained. The Mansion House café serves excellent food and hosts community events. Calderstones is a genuine community treasure — the Reader organisation (based in the Mansion House) promotes reading for wellbeing and hosts shared reading groups. The park attracts families, dog walkers, runners, and anyone who needs green space and ancient trees. It's less famous than Sefton Park but equally lovely and considerably quieter. A proper hidden gem of south Liverpool.
