About

Cathedral Quarter, Belfast BT1 2BA

The Cathedral Quarter is Belfast at its most vibrant and characterful — a compact area of cobbled streets, Victorian warehouses, and converted buildings north of the city centre that's become the city's creative and hospitality hub. Named after St Anne's Cathedral (a beautiful Romanesque building with a striking stainless steel Spire of Hope), the quarter has the best concentration of pubs, restaurants, live music, and street art in the city. The Duke of York is the pub that defines the area — a tiny, atmospheric bar in a narrow alley covered in mirrors, old signs, and memorabilia. Commercial Court, the alley outside, has been transformed with an umbrella canopy and murals. The Dirty Onion and the Harp Bar are both excellent for live traditional music. The Black Box is a brilliant multi-arts venue. The food scene has exploded — Ox (one of Belfast's best restaurants), The Muddlers Club, and Holohan's Pantry all operate here. The streets have a buzz in the evenings, especially at weekends, and the whole area has a creative energy that reflects Belfast's post-Troubles renaissance. The MAC (Metropolitan Arts Centre) is a superb contemporary arts venue with free exhibitions.
