About
The Jorvik Viking Festival in York is the largest Viking festival in Europe — a week of historical re-enactments, battles, crafts, talks, and living history events celebrating York's Norse heritage. The city was the Viking capital of England (Jorvik) from 866 to 954, and the festival brings this history spectacularly to life. The highlight is the combat re-enactments — hundreds of armoured Vikings fighting with swords, axes, and shields in the grounds of York's Eye of York. The battles are choreographed but physical and dramatic. Throughout the city, craft workshops demonstrate Viking-age skills — blacksmithing, leather working, textile weaving, and bone carving. The Viking market sells handmade goods and period-appropriate food. The festival runs for about a week in February half-term, making it an excellent family activity. Many events are free or low-cost. The Jorvik Viking Centre (the museum built on the site of the archaeological dig that uncovered Viking York) runs special events throughout. York in Viking festival mode is a brilliant experience — history made tangible, physical, and thrilling.
