About
The Open Championship — never 'the British Open' — is the oldest golf major in the world, first played at Prestwick in 1860. It rotates between links courses on the coast of Britain, and the combination of links golf, unpredictable weather, and the world's best players makes it one of the great sporting events of the year. The atmosphere at The Open is special — more accessible and democratic than the other majors. General admission tickets let you walk the course, following groups or finding a spot at a particular hole. The grandstands at the closing holes fill with drama on Sunday afternoon. The tented village has food, drink, merchandise, and interactive experiences. The weather is always a factor — links golf in Scotland or northern England means wind, rain, and sunshine are all possible in the same round. Dress in layers and bring waterproofs regardless of the forecast. Book accommodation and transport early — the host town and surrounding area fill up months in advance. Check the venue for 2026 as it rotates annually.
