Tate Liverpool
About
Tate Liverpool is the home of modern and contemporary art in the north of England — a stunning gallery in a converted Albert Dock warehouse that houses works from the Tate collection alongside ambitious temporary exhibitions. The brick-and-iron warehouse spaces give the gallery a distinctive character that sets it apart from the white-cube galleries in London. The permanent displays rotate but typically include major works from the 20th and 21st centuries — everything from Picasso and Mondrian to Hockney and contemporary video art. The temporary exhibitions are consistently world-class, often premiering shows that later transfer to Tate Modern. The gallery's relationship with the Liverpool Biennial (the UK's largest contemporary art festival) means the programme is always plugged into the international art conversation. It's free to the permanent collection and beautifully manageable in size — you can see everything in a couple of hours without gallery fatigue. The Albert Dock setting is gorgeous, and there are excellent restaurants and cafés nearby. Combined with the Beatles Story and the Maritime Museum (both also on the dock), you've got a full cultural day on the waterfront.
