Walker Art Gallery
About
The Walker Art Gallery is one of the finest art galleries in England outside London — a magnificent neoclassical building on William Brown Street that houses a collection spanning seven centuries. Pre-Raphaelites, Renaissance masters, Impressionists, and contemporary art are all represented, with particular strengths in Victorian painting and early Italian and Flemish work. The Pre-Raphaelite collection is exceptional — Millais, Rossetti, and Holman Hunt are all well represented. The medieval and Renaissance galleries include works by Cranach, Rembrandt, and Rubens. The modern art galleries have significant works by Hockney, Freud, and Bridget Riley. The sculpture gallery has an excellent collection including works by Rodin and Henry Moore. It's completely free and rarely crowded — a genuine hidden gem that art lovers outside Liverpool often don't know about. The building is part of a remarkable cultural cluster on William Brown Street: the World Museum, Central Library, and St George's Hall are all within a few steps. Allow 90 minutes to two hours. The café is decent. One of the great free experiences in the north of England.
