About

Hampstead Heath, London NW3 1TH

Hampstead Heath is 790 acres of ancient woodland, meadows, and wild swimming ponds sitting on a ridge above London — and on a clear day from Parliament Hill, you can see the entire city skyline spread out before you like a model village. It's the antidote to everything that can feel exhausting about London: no ticket barriers, no queues, just grass and trees and sky. The Heath has a wonderfully untamed quality that sets it apart from London's royal parks. Paths wind through dense woodland, past hidden ponds, and up to viewpoints that feel genuinely remote. The bathing ponds — separate ones for men, women, and mixed — are fed by natural springs and open year-round. Swimming here on a frosty December morning is a rite of passage for north Londoners. Kenwood House at the northern end of the Heath is a free neoclassical mansion with an excellent art collection including a Vermeer and several Rembrandts. The café terrace overlooking the lake is one of the most civilised spots in London for a cup of tea. Come for a walk, stay for an entire afternoon.
