About

100 London Road, Forest Hill, London SE23 3PQ

The Horniman is south London's great hidden treasure — a free museum in Forest Hill that's been delighting visitors since 1901. The eclectic collection spans natural history, musical instruments, and anthropology, with the famous overstuffed walrus as its unofficial mascot (a Victorian taxidermist who'd never seen a living walrus stuffed it until it had no wrinkles — the result is magnificently weird). The 16 acres of gardens are stunning — terraced hillside with panoramic views across London, a working farm with alpacas and goats, a nature trail, and a beautiful bandstand. Kids absolutely love it here. The aquarium (small entry fee) is well-curated with a focus on British marine life and conservation. The musical instrument collection — 9,000 instruments from around the world — is genuinely world-class. It's a 15-minute train ride from London Bridge to Forest Hill, and it feels like escaping to the countryside. The café is decent, the gift shop is charming, and the whole place has a warmth and personality that the big central London museums sometimes lack. Free entry to everything except the aquarium and temporary exhibitions.
