About

1 Eagle Street, Manchester M4 5BU

Mackie Mayor is a food hall in a Grade II-listed former meat market in Manchester's Northern Quarter. The restored Victorian building — all iron columns, glass roof, and gorgeous tile work — is spectacular, and the traders inside serve some of the best food in the city. Think of it as a curated food court where everything is actually good. The offering changes but typically includes wood-fired pizza, natural wine, craft beer, Asian street food, fresh pasta, and excellent coffee. The communal seating encourages sharing tables with strangers, and the atmosphere on a busy Friday evening — the room humming with conversation under the glass roof — is quintessentially Manchester: unpretentious, sociable, and quality-focused. It's walk-in only (no reservations), and peak times (Friday and Saturday evenings) get busy — arrive before 6pm or after 8pm for a calmer experience. The building alone is worth visiting for anyone who appreciates Victorian industrial architecture. Easily combined with exploring the Northern Quarter's independent shops, bars, and galleries.
