About

North Laine, Brighton BN1 1GE

North Laine is Brighton's bohemian shopping quarter — a grid of streets north of the Royal Pavilion packed with independent shops, vintage stores, vegan cafés, record shops, and the kind of places that don't exist anywhere else. This is where Brighton's alternative, creative identity is most visible: every shopfront is different, every street has its own character, and the word 'chain' is practically a swear word. The area roughly covers Kensington Gardens, Sydney Street, Gardner Street, and Bond Street. Highlights include Snoopers Paradise (a vast vintage emporium where you could spend hours), Resident Records (one of the best independent record shops in the south), Infinity Foods (a worker-run organic supermarket and café), and dozens of independent fashion, homeware, and gift shops. North Laine is best explored on foot, ideally on a Saturday when the energy is highest. The cafés and restaurants are excellent — Silo (zero-waste dining), Lucky Beach (burgers and cocktails), and the many vegan options reflect Brighton's progressive food culture. It's the antidote to every identikit high street in Britain, and the reason people fall in love with Brighton.
