The Mesmerist
About
The Mesmerist is a gloriously eccentric bar on Prince Albert Street in the Lanes that feels like drinking inside a Victorian curiosity shop. The décor is a maximalist explosion: taxidermy, vintage prints, gilt mirrors, velvet upholstery, and curiosities crammed into every corner. The name comes from Brighton's history of mesmerists and showpeople, and the spirit of theatrical excess lives on. The cocktails are excellent and theatrically presented — smoke, flames, dry ice, and elaborate garnishes are standard. The menu runs from classic cocktails to creative house specials, and the bar staff know their stuff. The food (burgers, sharing plates) is decent without being the main attraction. The ground floor is the main bar; upstairs there's a club space and events room. The rooftop terrace, when open, is one of the most atmospheric spots in the Lanes. DJ nights and live music happen regularly. The Mesmerist is Brighton at its most performatively weird — a bar that doesn't just serve drinks but creates an experience. It gets busy on weekend evenings, so arrive early for a table.
