About

Arthur's Seat, Holyrood Park, Edinburgh EH8 8HG

Arthur's Seat is an ancient volcano sitting right in the middle of Edinburgh — 251 metres of craggy, wind-blasted hill rising dramatically from Holyrood Park. The walk to the summit takes about 45 minutes from the Palace of Holyroodhouse car park, and the 360-degree views from the top are extraordinary: the castle, the Old Town, the Firth of Forth, the Pentland Hills, and on a clear day the Highlands beyond. There are several routes up. The most popular follows the path around the back via Dunsapie Loch — manageable for most fitness levels. The direct route up the western face is steeper and scrambly but quicker. Salisbury Crags, the dramatic cliff face on the western side, offers a stunning ridge walk with slightly less effort if you don't fancy the full summit. Wear proper shoes (it's rocky), bring a waterproof layer (Edinburgh weather is fickle), and check the wind forecast — it can be genuinely fierce at the top. Early morning is magical, especially at sunrise when you might have the summit to yourself. It's hard to believe you're standing on an extinct volcano in the middle of a capital city.
