About

The Royal Mile, Edinburgh EH1 1PB

The Royal Mile is Edinburgh's historic spine — a single, magnificent street running downhill from Edinburgh Castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse. It's actually about 1.12 miles (a Scots mile), and every yard is layered with history: medieval tenement buildings, hidden closes and courtyards, ancient churches, and more pubs than you could visit in a month. The real magic of the Royal Mile isn't the main thoroughfare — it's the closes. These narrow alleyways branch off on both sides, leading to hidden courtyards, unexpected gardens, and atmospheric passageways that feel unchanged since the 17th century. Advocate's Close, Dunbar's Close Garden, and Tweeddale Court are all worth seeking out. During the Edinburgh Festival in August, the Royal Mile transforms into the world's largest open-air performance space — street performers, flyerers, pop-up venues, and an electric atmosphere. Outside festival season, it's calmer but no less rewarding. St Giles' Cathedral (halfway down) is free to enter and magnificent. The Scotch Whisky Experience near the top, and the Scottish Parliament at the bottom, bookend the walk perfectly.
