About

St Aldate's, Oxford OX1 1DP

Christ Church is Oxford's grandest college — founded by Cardinal Wolsey in 1524 and refounded by Henry VIII, it's simultaneously a college, a cathedral, and a picture gallery. The Great Hall with its hammer-beam ceiling was the inspiration for the Hogwarts Great Hall (though the film version was a studio set). The Tom Tower, designed by Christopher Wren, houses Great Tom, which still rings 101 times at 21:05 every evening. Christ Church Cathedral is the smallest cathedral in England and the college chapel — a unique double function. The meadow behind the college is a beautiful riverside walk along the Thames and the Cherwell, with views back to the college's dreaming spires that define the Oxford skyline. The Picture Gallery houses an impressive collection of Old Master drawings and paintings — works by Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Dürer among others. Christ Church is the most visited college in Oxford and timed entry keeps numbers manageable, so book ahead in summer. The combination of architecture, art, and landscape makes it the one college you should see if you only see one.
