About

Radcliffe Square, Oxford OX1 4AJ

The Radcliffe Camera is probably the most photographed building in Oxford — a circular domed library sitting in Radcliffe Square, surrounded by some of the most beautiful architecture in Europe. You can't go inside unless you're a Bodleian reader (it's a reading room), but the exterior and the square itself are stunning at any time of day. At night, when it's floodlit, it's magical. Radcliffe Square is enclosed by the Bodleian Library, the University Church of St Mary the Virgin, All Souls College, and Brasenose College. All Souls is unique — it has no undergraduates, only fellows elected by examination in what's been called the hardest exam in the world. The twin towers and the Codrington Library are architectural masterpieces visible from the street. Climb the tower of St Mary's church for the best views over the Radcliffe Camera and across the Oxford skyline — it's a modest fee and the panorama from the top is the definitive Oxford view. The square itself is one of those spaces that makes you understand why people fall in love with this city.
