About

Bootham Bar, York YO1 7BZ

York's city walls are the longest and best-preserved medieval walls in England — 3.4 kilometres of 13th-century fortification that you can walk almost entirely around, giving you an elevated perspective on 2,000 years of history. The Romans built the first defences, the Normans rebuilt them, and the medieval walls you walk today have survived sieges, civil wars, and Victorian developers who wanted to knock them down. The full circuit takes about two hours at a leisurely pace, with multiple access points if you want to do shorter sections. The stretch from Bootham Bar to Monk Bar is the most popular — passing behind the Minster with spectacular views of the cathedral's east end. The Micklegate Bar section gives views across to the railway station and the Knavesmire racecourse. The four medieval gatehouses (Bars) are highlights in themselves — Monk Bar houses the Richard III Experience, and Micklegate Bar has a small museum. Walking the walls is free, open, and one of the best things to do in York. Early morning walks are peaceful, and the views change beautifully with the seasons. Wear sensible shoes — the walkway is uneven in places.
