Bodnant Garden
About
Bodnant Garden is one of the finest gardens in Britain — 80 acres of formal terraces, wild garden, and woodland valley above the River Conwy with views across to the Snowdonia range. The garden was created over five generations of the McLaren family from the 1870s and is now owned by the National Trust. The famous laburnum arch, in full bloom in late May and early June, is one of the most photographed garden features in the world. The terraced Italianate gardens descend from the house through rose terraces, the Lily Terrace, and the Pin Mill to the Dell — a deep, wooded valley with streams, waterfalls, and towering trees. The spring display of rhododendrons, magnolias, and camellias is spectacular. The autumn colour in the Dell is among the best in Wales. Bodnant is a garden for all seasons, but late May (for the laburnum arch) and October (for the autumn colour) are the peak months. The café and plant centre are excellent. Allow at least two hours for a good visit, more if you explore the far reaches of the estate. The views across the Conwy Valley to Snowdon on a clear day add a dramatic backdrop that most gardens can't match.
