About

Rose Hill Street, Conwy LL32 8AY

Conwy Castle is one of the greatest medieval fortresses in Europe — built by Edward I in just four years (1283-1287) as part of his iron ring of castles to subjugate Wales. Eight massive towers, a great hall, and intact town walls that still encircle the entire medieval town make this a UNESCO World Heritage Site that genuinely earns the designation. The views from the battlements across the estuary to the mountains of Snowdonia are stunning. The town walls are remarkably complete — you can walk almost the entire circuit along the top, looking down into the town on one side and across to the harbour and the mountains on the other. The town itself is charming — a walled medieval grid of streets with independent shops, a harbour full of fishing boats, and the Smallest House in Great Britain on the quayside (it really is tiny, and you can go inside for a pound). Conwy is a proper working town, not a museum piece. The harbour has excellent fish and chips. The Albion Ale House on Upper Gate Street is one of the best real ale pubs in North Wales. Allow a couple of hours for the castle and walls, then wander the town. The views of the castle at night, floodlit against the mountains, are magnificent.
