Loch Lomond
About
Loch Lomond is barely 30 minutes from Glasgow city centre and it's one of the most beautiful lochs in Scotland. The largest lake in Britain by surface area, it sits at the gateway to the Highlands with Ben Lomond rising on its eastern shore. The contrast between the gentle, island-dotted south end and the dramatic, mountain-flanked north end is part of its magic. Balloch at the south end is the easiest access point — there's a train station, boat trips, and the loch shore is a short walk away. For something quieter, Balmaha on the east shore is gorgeous — you can climb Conic Hill for staggering views down the loch, or take the ferry to Inchcailloch island for woodland walks. The West Highland Way runs along the eastern shore. The loch is part of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park. Watersports are popular — kayaking, paddleboarding, and swimming (it's cold, obviously). The Duck Bay area has restaurants with loch views. As a day trip from Glasgow, it's unbeatable — proper Highland scenery without the drive. Summer weekends get busy at the popular spots, so go early or head to the quieter northern stretches.
