About

Abbey Church Yard, Bath BA1 1LZ

The Roman Baths are one of the best-preserved Roman sites in Northern Europe — a complex of bathing chambers, temples, and sacred springs built around Britain's only naturally hot spring, which pumps out over a million litres of water a day at 46°C. The site has been a place of worship and bathing for over 2,000 years, from the Celtic goddess Sulis to the Roman goddess Minerva. The Great Bath itself is stunning — a lead-lined pool surrounded by Roman columns and Victorian terracing, its green water still steaming. The museum below ground level is excellent, displaying thousands of artefacts including curse tablets (messages to the gods scratched on lead and thrown into the sacred spring — ancient Tripadvisor reviews, essentially), jewellery, and the famous Gorgon's Head pediment. The audio guide (included) is narrated by Bill Bryson and is genuinely entertaining. Allow at least 90 minutes. Evening visits (in summer) are magical — the baths are lit by torchlight and the crowds thin dramatically. Note: you can't swim here — for that, head across the road to Thermae Bath Spa. Book timed tickets online; walk-up queues in summer can be brutal.
