Beatrix Potter Gallery
About
The Beatrix Potter Gallery in Hawkshead displays original illustrations, watercolours, and personal items from one of England's most beloved authors and a remarkable woman who was also a pioneering farmer, conservationist, and mycologist. The gallery is housed in a 17th-century building that was once the office of Potter's husband, solicitor William Heelis. The displays rotate annually, drawing from the National Trust's extensive collection of Potter's work. Seeing the original watercolours close up reveals a quality and precision that reproductions can't capture — her observations of animal anatomy and behaviour were meticulous. The gallery also tells the story of Potter the landowner, who bought farms across the Lake District and bequeathed over 4,000 acres to the National Trust. The gallery is small — allow about 45 minutes — but it's beautifully done. Combined with a visit to Hill Top (Potter's farmhouse, a 20-minute drive away) and a walk around Hawkshead village, it makes for a perfect half-day exploring Potter's Lake District. Book timed tickets for Hill Top in summer — it's extremely popular.
