American Museum & Gardens
About
The American Museum & Gardens sits in Claverton Manor, a beautiful Greek Revival house on a hillside east of Bath, and houses the finest collection of American decorative arts outside the United States. Period rooms recreate American domestic interiors from the 17th to the 19th century — Puritan New England, Shaker communities, the antebellum South, and the frontier West — with genuine artefacts and remarkable attention to detail. The Shaker room is particularly striking — the simplicity and craftsmanship of Shaker furniture is beautiful. The quilts gallery has an extraordinary collection of American patchwork quilts. The replica of George Washington's garden at Mount Vernon in the grounds is a lovely touch. The wider gardens offer views across the Limpley Stoke Valley. It's about 15 minutes from Bath by car or bus, and feels like a proper day trip. The tearoom is pleasant and the grounds are worth exploring. Allow 2-3 hours. It's an unusual and rewarding museum — the kind of place that makes you appreciate the craftsmanship of everyday objects and the stories that domestic spaces tell about the people who lived in them.
