About

Wollaton Hall, Wollaton, Nottingham NG8 2AE

Wollaton Hall is an Elizabethan prodigy house — an extraordinary, extravagant mansion built in the 1580s by the coal baron Francis Willoughby. The building is deliberately showy, with corner towers, huge windows, and a central prospect room on the roof that gives panoramic views. It was used as Wayne Manor in The Dark Knight Rises, and you can immediately see why — it looks like a superhero's house. The hall houses Nottingham Natural History Museum, with impressive geology, zoology, and botanical collections. The deer park surrounding the hall is beautiful — 500 acres of parkland with herds of red and fallow deer roaming freely. It's one of the finest urban parks in the East Midlands, and on a summer evening the sight of deer grazing in front of the Elizabethan hall is extraordinary. The park is free and open daily — a hugely popular walking, jogging, and picnicking spot. The formal gardens are well maintained. The café is in the old stable block. Wollaton is about two miles west of the city centre and easily reached by bus. Allow a couple of hours for the house and a walk in the park. A stunning building in a stunning setting, and most people outside Nottingham have never heard of it.
