Whinlatter Forest
About
Whinlatter is England's only true mountain forest — 1,200 acres of Sitka spruce, Douglas fir, and native broadleaf woodland draped across the fells between Keswick and Cockermouth. It's the Lake District's best destination for families who want adventure without technical fell walking: mountain bike trails, a Go Ape treetop course, waymarked walking trails, a wild play area for children, and a visitor centre with red squirrel viewing cameras. The red squirrel population at Whinlatter is one of England's most significant — the forest is a stronghold for the species, and the feeding stations near the visitor centre give reliable sightings. The webcams (live in the visitor centre) show nest boxes and feeding areas. Osprey viewing is available during breeding season at the nearby Bassenthwaite Lake. The mountain bike trails range from gentle forest roads to a challenging black-graded route through the trees. The walking trails are well-maintained and waymarked — the summit trail gives panoramic views across Derwentwater and the northern fells. The Go Ape course is excellent. The visitor centre café is good, and the forest has several excellent picnic spots. A proper family day out in genuine mountain forest.
