Ashton Lane
About
Ashton Lane is a cobbled lane tucked behind Byres Road in the West End, and it's probably the most atmospheric wee street in Glasgow. Fairy lights strung overhead, pub gardens spilling out onto the cobbles, and a cluster of restaurants, bars, and the beloved Grosvenor Cinema packed into a space barely wider than a car. The Ubiquitous Chip has been here since 1971 and remains one of Glasgow's best restaurants — Scottish ingredients done beautifully in a glass-roofed courtyard draped in greenery. Jinty McGuinty's is the lane's Irish pub with live music most nights. The Grosvenor Cinema is a proper old-school picture house with sofas and a bar. It's at its best on a warm evening when the whole lane fills up with people drinking, eating, and enjoying the atmosphere. In winter, the fairy lights and the cosy pub interiors make it equally appealing. A proper Glasgow institution — everyone from students to grandparents considers this their local.
