About

Princes Wharf, Wapping Road, Bristol BS1 4RN

M Shed is Bristol's museum of itself — telling the story of the city from prehistoric times to the present day through the objects, voices, and experiences of the people who've lived here. Housed in a 1950s transit shed on the harbourside (hence the name), the museum uses real artefacts, oral histories, film, and interactive displays to bring Bristol's complex history to life. The collection covers everything from the slave trade (Bristol's role is acknowledged honestly and powerfully) to the Concorde project, from Victorian industry to the 2011 Stokes Croft riots. The approach is community-driven — ordinary Bristolians have contributed objects and stories, giving the museum an authenticity that top-down curation can't achieve. The working cranes on the quayside outside are occasionally fired up for demonstrations. The rooftop terrace has excellent harbour views. It's completely free, well-designed for families, and gives you a genuine understanding of what makes Bristol tick. Combined with the SS Great Britain and Arnolfini next door, the harbourside makes for a full cultural day out.
