About

Exhibition Square, York YO1 7EW

York Art Gallery sits on the edge of Museum Gardens in a handsome Italianate building and houses an impressive collection spanning 600 years of art. The permanent collection includes works by L.S. Lowry, David Hockney, and an outstanding collection of early Italian panel paintings. The gallery's Centre of Ceramic Art (CoCA) — a dedicated ceramics gallery — is the largest of its kind in the UK, with over 5,000 pieces. The temporary exhibition programme is ambitious for a regional gallery, regularly attracting nationally significant shows. The gallery underwent a major renovation that added new gallery spaces and improved the displays — the ceramics gallery in particular is beautifully presented, with pieces ranging from medieval pots to contemporary studio ceramics. The rooftop gallery on the top floor has a small artists' garden and views across Museum Gardens to the Minster. The café is pleasant. Allow 60-90 minutes for a thorough visit. It's a calm, uncrowded space that often gets overlooked in favour of York's more famous historical attractions, but the quality of the collection — especially the ceramics — is genuinely world-class.
